Every organization is a mixture of individuals who represent different backgrounds, interests and beliefs. Each individual has a different personality, mindset and attitude towards work. Some people have easy going personalities and others are more difficult.

Unifying all individuals to form a collective team can be a challenge. Managers are appointed to motivate and lead the group. Leading groups requires effective leadership skills.

Effective leadership skills can be an inherited quality or it may be developed over the time. There are a lot factors that contribute to effective leadership skills. The first one is ethical behavior. A leader must behave ethically and be able to set the standards for others to follow. High levels of integrity and concern for others serve as an example for others to follow.

Strategic thinking is another important aspect of business leadership skills. The leader should be able to understand and define various problems faced by the group and then work through to a logical solution. Solving problems is part of everyday effective leadership in the workplace.

A leader is also expected to set goals and targets for the whole team and then define strategies to achieve them. His role is to set realistic goals and motivate other team members to achieve these goals. He should be able to back his team members and infuse confidence in them. This encourages others to manifest goals which benefit the entire organization.

A leader is expected to be a good communicator. This includes being able to deal with different team members and know how to get the best from them. This includes motivating them, guiding them and bringing members who are out of order back into line.

There are other factors that are also important such is making timely decisions. Often short term decisions are called for with little time for consideration. Acting decisively and without hesitation is the hallmark of an effective leader.

Assertiveness is another quality that is expected from a leader. This includes being able to analyze the situation and to act accordingly. Knowing team members strengths and weaknesses can define their work roles. Maximizing individual's strengths and minimizing weaknesses is a characteristic of a good leader.

An effective leader should also know how to encourage and build effective leadership skills in others. This may include designing mentoring programs or leadership training to improve the skills and decision making of others.

These are the major factors that define the effective leadership skills of an individual. A leader has to lead from the front. He should be able to lead by example.
